Chemical imaging of insulators by STM
نویسندگان
چکیده
Nanostructures of CaF2 and CaF1 on Si~111! are used to demonstrate a chemical imaging method for insulators. Chemical sensitivity is achieved in scanning tunneling microscopy via a sharp drop of the tunneling current for bias voltages below the conduction-band minimum. This imaging method has a spatial resolution of better than 1 nm and distinguishes different oxidation states. A resonance is found in (dI/dV)/(I/V) at the conduction-band minimum that enables an accurate determination of its position. We observe enhancements by up to a factor of 5 and absolute values in the range of 20–50, compared to 1 for an Ohmic metal. A minimal model is given, explaining the resonance in terms of tunneling across a thin insulator film. These methods should be generally applicable for determining local Schottky barriers and band offsets in nanostructures and for chemically selective imaging of insulators and wide-gap semiconductors. @S0163-1829~99!07215-X#

Scanning tunneling microscopy studies of topological insulators.
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), with surface sensitivity, is an ideal tool to probe the intriguing properties of the surface state of topological insulators (TIs) and topological crystalline insulators (TCIs). We summarize the recent progress on those topological phases revealed by STM studies. STM observations have directly confirmed the existence of the topological surface states and cle...
متن کاملEvanescent microwaves: a novel super-resolution noncontact nondestructive imaging technique for biological applications
Scanning tunneling microscopes (STM) and atomic force microscopes (AFM) are used to study biological materials. These methods, often capable of achieving atomic resolutions, reveal fascinating information regarding the inner workings of these materials. However, both STM and AFM require physical contact to the specimen. In the case of STM the specimen needs to be conducting as well. Here we int...
متن کاملChemical contrast in STM imaging of transition metal aluminides
The present manuscript reviews recent scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) studies of transition metal (TM) aluminide surfaces. It provides a general perspective on the contrast between Al atoms and TM atoms in STM imaging. A general trend is the much stronger bias dependence of TM atoms, or TM-rich regions of the surface. This dependence can be attenuated by the local chemical arrangements and...
متن کاملMolecular - Scale Structure of Pentacene Interfaces with Si ( 111 )
The morphology and crystal structure of the first few molecular layers of organic semiconductor thin films at organic-inorganic interfaces are important from both electronic and structural perspectives. The first upright layer of pentacene on Si (111) forms on top of a disordered layer of strongly bonded pentacene molecules in a structure similar to the pentacene monolayers formed on insulators...

The fascinating advances in single atom/molecule manipulation with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip allow scientists to fabricate atomic-scale structures or to probe chemical and physical properties of matters at an atomic level. Owing to these advances, it has become possible for the basic chemical reaction steps, such as dissociation, diffusion, adsorption, readsorption, and bond-for...
